Some stories are meant to be read. Others are meant to be heard. And sometimes, bringing a story to life means finding your own voice—literally.

I'm thrilled to announce that South of Hope, Book Two in my Enchanted Rock Romance Series, is officially available as an audiobook!

Available on Audible and Apple Books!

And here's the exciting (and slightly terrifying) part: I narrated it myself.

That's right. Every tender confession, every heated argument, every stolen kiss, and every heartbreaking moment between Amber Walker and Merrick Holt is brought to life by yours truly.

What started as another adventure in independent publishing turned into one of the most rewarding—and unexpectedly educational—experiences of my writing journey.

From the Texas Hill Country to the Recording Booth

South of Hope Audiobook

If you've read South of Hope, you already know that Amber and Merrick aren't exactly the type to make love easy.

She's a fiercely independent artist determined to build a life on her own terms. He's a rugged rodeo cowboy carrying more emotional baggage than he'd ever admit. Their chemistry is undeniable, their connection runs deep, and when betrayal tears them apart, finding their way back to each other requires more than a few heartfelt apologies.

Set against the sweeping beauty of the Texas Hill Country, South of Hope is a story about trust, forgiveness, second chances, and the courage it takes to love someone after they've broken your heart.

When I began considering an audiobook edition, I kept imagining how these characters would sound. I could practically hear Merrick's Texas drawl, Amber's stubborn determination, and the vulnerability hiding beneath their sharpest exchanges.

And then I thought: Why not narrate it myself?

How hard could it be?

Famous last words.

The Unexpected Magic of Reading Your Own Book Aloud

South of Hope Audiobook

Here's something nobody tells you about recording an audiobook: It's one of the most effective editing tools an author could ever ask for.

As writers, we spend countless hours staring at our manuscripts. We read, reread, revise, rearrange, and polish until we're convinced every sentence is exactly where it belongs.

But reading those same words aloud? That's an entirely different experience.

Suddenly, the sentences that looked beautiful on the page revealed themselves to be awkward when spoken. Dialogue that seemed perfectly natural in my head occasionally sounded a little too formal. A paragraph I adored might run so long that I practically needed oxygen halfway through.

And repetition? Oh, the repetition.

Trust me, nothing makes you notice an overused word or phrase faster than hearing yourself say it for the fifteenth time.

I discovered that my ears caught things my eyes had learned to overlook.

Recording South of Hope became an unexpected final editorial pass, one that helped me refine the rhythm, pacing, and emotional authenticity of the manuscript.

I tightened sentences that stumbled. I adjusted dialogue to sound more conversational. I caught little inconsistencies and polished transitions that needed a smoother flow.

Most importantly, I discovered where the emotional moments truly worked—and where they needed a little more breathing room.

Reading a book silently allows you to appreciate the words. Reading it aloud forces you to experience them.

And that made all the difference.

Becoming Amber, Merrick, and Everyone in Between

South of Hope Audiobook

Of course, narrating your own romance novel comes with a few unique challenges.

For starters, there's the small matter of performing both sides of a romantic relationship.

One minute, I'm Amber, trying to hold herself together while the man she loves breaks her heart. The next, I'm Merrick, a stubborn, occasionally infuriating cowboy struggling to find the words to make things right.

Then come the supporting characters, each with their own personalities, attitudes, and voices.

Let's just say my recording sessions occasionally involved some rather interesting conversations with myself.

And yes, narrating the steamy scenes was an experience all its own. There's something wonderfully humbling about sitting alone in front of a microphone, reading an intimate scene you wrote, and realizing you now have to deliver every breathless word with a straight face.

Coffee helped. So did a sense of humor. Especially with the sexy scenes.

But beneath the technical challenges and occasional awkward moments, something wonderful happened.

I connected with my characters in a completely new way.

Speaking Amber's heartbreak aloud made her vulnerability more immediate. Giving Merrick a voice helped me better understand the tension between his pride, insecurity, and desperate need to make things right.

Scenes I'd written months earlier surprised me with their emotional impact.

And more than once, I found myself stopping after a particularly difficult passage and thinking, Wow. That one still hurts.

A New Appreciation for the Art of Storytelling

South of Hope Audiobook

Recording an audiobook is about so much more than reading words into a microphone.

It's performance, pacing, interpretation, patience, and an astonishing amount of attention to detail.

Every pause matters. Every change in tone communicates something. The difference between a whispered confession and a frustrated declaration can transform an entire scene.

I learned to listen to my writing as carefully as I had learned to look at it.

And while the process required plenty of retakes, technical adjustments, and moments when my tongue simply refused to cooperate, it gave me a deeper appreciation for the art of narration.

It also reinforced something I've always believed about storytelling: The best stories aren't simply told. They're experienced.

Your Next Road Trip Just Got a Little More Romantic

South of Hope Audiobook

One of my favorite things about audiobooks is the freedom they give us to escape into another world while going about our everyday lives.

Whether you're driving through the Texas Hill Country, heading to work, taking a long walk, painting in your studio, or tackling that never-ending pile of laundry, Amber and Merrick can now come along for the ride.

And if you're new to the Enchanted Rock Romance Series, South of Hope offers plenty of the things I love most about contemporary romance: complicated characters, emotional chemistry, small-town charm, found family, a little heat, and a hard-earned happily-ever-after.

For readers who already know Amber and Merrick, I hope hearing their story adds another layer of intimacy to the journey.

Because sometimes hearing three little words spoken aloud makes them mean so much more.

Thank You for Listening—and for Reading

South of Hope Audiobook

As an independent author, every new release feels like a small miracle. Taking a story from the first spark of an idea to a finished novel is an adventure in itself.

Turning that novel into an audiobook—and lending it my own voice—has made this release especially personal.

I'm proud of how South of Hope has evolved through the writing, editing, and recording process. What began as a love story about two imperfect people finding their way back to each other became a reminder of why I love writing romance in the first place.

Because love is messy. People make mistakes. Forgiveness takes courage. And sometimes the most beautiful love stories are the ones that have to fight for their happy ending.

South of Hope is now available in audiobook format, narrated by yours truly, Jules Woods.

I hope you'll give it a listen, fall a little bit in love with a certain Texas cowboy, and perhaps discover something new about Amber and Merrick along the way.

And if you do listen, I'd absolutely love to hear what you think! Reviews, messages, and recommendations mean the world to independent authors.

Happy listening, y'all! 🎧💙

P.S. If you've ever wondered what it's like for an author to read her own steamy romance scenes into a microphone, let's just say I've developed a whole new appreciation for the phrase occupational hazard. 😉
